a mocking bird
practicing his song at night ~
too young to sing by day
We had a house guest once who was kept awake all night by a mocking bird. The guest was a singer, and he couldn't stop trying to figure out what the next note would be. A fellow birder told me that only the juveniles sing at night--they do that because if they sang during the day they would be chased away by the adult birds.
